Opioid Prescribing Education
This on-demand course has been approved by the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board as meeting the requirements for two (2.0) hours of continuing education on responsible opioid prescribing per Med 13.03(3) of the Wisconsin Administrative Code. 

Method of Participation and Certificate of Completion
This course consists of a pre-recorded lecture broken into three segments, allowing participants to learn at their own pace. Upon registration, you will receive a link to view the webinar. After viewing the presentation, participants must complete an online evaluation and learning assessment in order to receive a certificate of completion. 

Course Description
This session will review Wisconsin’s opioid epidemic, and will include a review of Wisconsin’s new prescribing guidelines, a glimpse into an opioid-free ED, and a discussion of the emergency physicians’ role in combating the epidemic.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand Wisconsin’s new prescribing guidelines
  • Explain why the pain scale is more provider-centric than patient-centric
  • Identify alternate method of assessing patient pain
  • Discuss strategies for controlling pain in the emergency department without opioid medications
  • Describe the impact of opioid abuse on the U.S. population
  • Discuss strategies for assessing the benefits and risks of using opioid analgesics in the emergency department setting
  • Explain the purpose and appropriate use of prescription drug monitoring programs
  • Identify strategies for treating acute pain in emergency department patients with a history of addiction
